The main attraction at Galle is the historic fortress which surrounds the city. Our driver suggested that we start later in the day to avoid the savage day time heat – which turned out to be another top suggestion. After a well needed sleep-in and burning ourselves by the pool in the morning, we headed for Galle in the mid-late afternoon.
It probably only took us an hour or so to walk the wall and after the excitement of whale watching yesterday, it felt a bit tame, but it was good; a pleasant afternoon stroll in a photogenic little city – it kind of reminded my of the Bar Walls which surround York, where I live. We didn’t do an awful lot within the constraints of the walls. We stopped by a church on the way and I dare say there might have been more to do, but I felt like we had covered a lot of the museum stuff in previous bigger museums and weren’t really hungry – so didn’t want to stop at one of the many places to eat; we just admired the views from the walls.

We headed back to our hotel via Jungle Beach and the Japanese Peace Pagoda, which I’d defiantly recommended popping to see if you’re in the area. They’re very close to each other and not far at all from Galle.
