I know it’s not very British, but let’s talk about money…
For those in a rush, or wanting to avoid the topic, the TL;DR is:
- If you can’t afford to buy my images, you’re welcome to screenshot them and use them (for personal use).
- Please credit the image to me, if you do this – ideally with a link to the relevant social media profile, or my website.
- If you want free images for commercial use, check out my account on Unsplash, or maybe the work of some of the other creators on there.
I price my images as reasonably as possible, taking into account the time taken to shoot, edit and curate – not to mention the cost of hard and software. (There are endless other expenses, both tangible and intangible, that I won’t bore you with, since I’m sure you get the point).
At the time of typing, a digital image for personal use (e.g. sharing on your personal social media) will cost £10. For commercial use (on a brand/company’s social media), it’s £50.
Prints will vary, depending on what you want it printed on, but there’s a load of options, directly through my site.
If you genuinely haven’t got the cash
I recognise that not everyone has the money to purchase photos. But photos aren’t your usual nonessential purchase. I mean, yes, you can do without them, but they provoke emotions and hold memories unlike other things you want but don’t need. For this reason, I wouldn’t want to prevent someone from accessing an image that meant something to them – particularly if it’s of them.
The images on my website are therefore unwatermarked and in good enough quality for a screenshot to give you the memory for free, without an unsightly obstruction telling you who took the photo.
Further than this though, I’m also happy for you to use the screenshotted image for personal use (like a post on social media). All I ask in return for this is that you link/credit back to me wherever you post it. You can link to any of the following:
- Web: www.chris-kendall.com
- IG: @ChrisKendallPhotography
- Twit: @TheChrisKendall
- FB: @ChrisKendallPhotography
If you don’t want to credit, you’re welcome to buy the image, where of course, credit is still appreciated, but my expectations are lowered.
What about commercial use?
Sorry, but if you’re looking to use my images to make money, you’re gonna have to make the investment.
That said, I appreciate that life’s rarely black and white, so if you think you have a proposal which might be different, feel free to get in touch.
However, there is one final option, if you’re looking for copyright free images for commercial use…
For many years I worked, and gave thousands of images away, for free. Whether this is a good idea is a contentious point amongst aspiring photographers, but it’s a principle I stand by. So, to walk my talk, in addition to not throwing a hissy fit if you screenshot one of my images, I have started to, and will continue to post a small number of images, maybe monthly, maybe bi-monthly (but most likely whenever I remember) to the website Unsplash. You can follow my account, to keep up-to-date with what images I’m giving away.
This website is a fantastic resource for high quality, copyright free images, and I point any business without the funds to pay for images in their direction. Sure it’s not as good as licensing a photographers image, since you’re going to see many other people and businesses using them – but it’s better than nothing, and a great way to get started, whilst you generate the cash you need to book me for a shoot 😉.
If you do use an image of mine from Unsplash, let me know by tagging me in the post or messaging me directly. It’s cool to see my work in use and I might even be able to give you a share to my followers!
It should go without saying, but for the avoidance of doubt: I reserve the copyright to my images and the right to revoke or amend this gesture of good will at any time.
